PARKING & DESTRUCTION
OF GRASS VERGES
The inexorable growth of car ownership says something
about our prosperity but the consequences for roads,
pavements, grass verges and general vistas is now
unacceptable.
We can continually repair damage done to our roads and
verges but this is expensive and not the answer in the
long run.
We need a new strategy for parking on our roads,
particularly overnight. We need to ensure that residents
themselves do not park on pavements and grass verges.
( We had a complainant recently who then admitted that
friends parked on the verge so that their cars did not get
damaged) Sorry folks you cannot have it both ways!
Currently, the work being done by Affinity Water is creating
problems but they do reinstate verges.
Changing byelaws is, for us, not the answer: If we own a
car it has to be parked.
A massive rethink is needed both for overnight and
shoppers parking; here and nationwide.
Ideas from residents will be very welcome as we do not
have the monopoly on new initiatives.

At the District Council Meeting, Conservative Councillors raised a motion at Full Council to address this issue summarised as follows:
"At present we are unable to add enforceable conditions to planning applications that require repairs and reinstatement from the owners of vehicles damaging the pavements and verges; that is simply unacceptable. In order to bring this to an end we need a change in legislation.
